Swimming is a great exercise for those pets who are having extreme difficulty walking around on their own. We go in with each patient and they all wear a life vest. We help them get used to the water and guide them around the pool. The water is always heated to 90 degrees to help with warming up their joints.
For our more athletic patients who want to condition for events, this is great for them. We can turn on the jets which create an endless pool effect that they can swim against for a really great workout. If pets are strong enough, they can swim on their own while a therapist is right there watching.
Each patient goes in one at a time. We do not offer "free swims" where multiple dogs go in together for fun. Swimming here is really exercise where we focus on how they are moving and how to challenge them to improve.
Swimming really works the front end of a dog which is great for anyone with shoulder or elbow ailments. We have also found that our tri-pod patients are great swimmers!! Either with a hind limb or a front limb amputation, they do fantastic in the pool.
